WHAT IS RESONATOR? DOES IT HAMPERS PERFORMANCE? DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A MUFFLER AND A RESONATOR

In the last post, we have seen that how a muffler works, it's types and it's pros and cons. Now we will see the device which is present before/in front of the muffler that is Resonator.
What Is It For?
The purpose of a resonator is to cancel out a certain range of frequencies which are generally not pleasant to hear when cruising at low constant speed. That irritating buzz would be caused due to the presence of low-frequency sound waves. This can be called as Exhaust drone. That's why automotive engineers would like to make a  separate device called resonator to cancel out these frequencies even though mufflers are present.
CONSTRUCTION:
Its design is simply like a straight through muffler.Almost all resonators are designed as a round pipe. When you see the cross section of a resonator, you will find that in the middle a perforated stainless steel rounded shell is present which is directly connected to the exhaust pipe outside of the resonator on both the sides.Depends on the type of engine like small or large, selection of a resonator is significant because, for large engines, the selected resonator should have a larger exhaust pipe and larger perforated stainless steel shell. The steel shell is covered with a stainless steel wool which provides durability under high temperatures with additional sound absorption and causes no blowout.Above the steel wool covering, a high-temperature acoustical suppression material is placed for maximum sound absorption. The whole setup is covered with the stainless steel outer covering.

WORKING:
It's working is simple as a straight through muffler.Initially, when the exhaust gas enters the resonator, some of the frequencies of the sound waves which causes exhaust drone passes through the perforations on the stainless steel shell and enters the stainless steel wool. Here the sound energy is converted into heat energy thereby results in no exhaust drone. If any sound cancellation required further, the fiberglass present over the steel wool helps to cancel out sound waves. Here both stainless steel wool and fiberglass provides the insulation in order to retain the heat inside the resonator.

#Eventhough we have understood the purpose, working of a resonator still we have doubted on that whether it is really needed for a vehicle or not.See guys, the job of a muffler would be easier due to the presence of a resonator because it cancels out some of the low-frequency sound waves which cause exhaust drone. So the rest of the frequencies will cancel out by the muffler. Here both the devices are used to cancel out the frequencies of the sound waves. But what is the actual difference between them?
Let's compare both the muffler and  the resonator:
1) MUFFLER:
• Lowers the sound level.
• Usually packed with fiberglass.
• Doesn't eliminate certain frequencies of a sound wave which causes exhaust drone(but aftermarket mufflers don't need any resonator. They will eliminate exhaust drone also).
•Increases engine backpressure, hamper performance(HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE).
2)RESONATOR:
• Almost straight pipe sound level.
• Cancel certain frequencies of sound waves which causes exhaust drone and obnoxious noise.
• Decreases engine backpressure, increases performance.
• Not adjustable at all.
Both resonator and muffler constitutively give minimum noise of exhaust note irrespective of various speeds. But there will be a decrease in performance because of developed back pressure due to the presence of muffler.
That's why some people want to delete either muffler or resonator or both.Deleting them depends on your wish that is when you want no noise, quiet sound, better performance, go for muffler deletion.Suppose if you want better performance, no exhaust drone, no bothering about noise when driving at high speeds, go for resonator deletion. But if you want louder tone with irritating buzz with more frequency, no back pressure, go for deletion of both#

From the above discussion, I hope you have understood the concept of a resonator with respect to the muffler.
